- Applications are open now to be admitted into postgraduate programs of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) for the academic session 2022/2023. The Postgraduate School, Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) is seeking applicants who meet the requirements to be admitted into its diverse postgraduate programs for the 2022/2023 academic year. Postgraduate courses are offered as Diploma, Master, and Doctorate degree programs in Regular Part-Time, Regular as well as Centre to Continuing Education (Weekend) methods. The University also offers postgraduate courses in three areas: the Institute of Women, Gender and Development Studies (IWoGDS), the Institute of Erosion Studies (IES), and the Public Procurement Research Centre (PPRC).
FUTO Postgraduate Admission Requirements
1.0 GENERAL ENTRY REQUIREMENT
These are the basic requirements for admission to the postgraduate programs of FUTO:
- In order to take Engineering courses, applicants require credit passes at the ‘level’ of English Language, Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry.
- For courses that do not require a degree, applicants need to have five credits, comprising English Language, Mathematics, Biology/Agricultural Science as well as two other subjects relevant to O’level.
2.0 OTHER NECESSARY INFORMATION
2.1 Postgraduate Diploma (PGD)
Here are the requirements for entry in postgraduate diplomas: Postgraduate Diploma program:
- All applicants must fulfill the requirements for matriculation, which includes O’level credit scores in English mathematics and language and any other relevant subjects that are prescribed to be a part of the Department.
- Holders of HNDs with an average of credit or higher in their areas of expertise and professional certifications like ICAN, ACA, FIST, and FMILT. and FNIST might also be eligible to be admitted.
- Master’s degrees in the discipline of study obtained from FUTO or another recognized university that has at least a minimum of a third-class distinction.
- A solid Bachelor’s Degree that has at least second-class distinction in the other disciplines.
3.0 MASTERS: M.SC, M.ENG, M. TECH, AND MPH
Candidates applying for the Master of Science (M.Sc), Master of Engineering (M.Eng), Master of Technology (M.Tech), and Master of Public Health (MPH) programs must possess any of the following, in addition to O’Level Credit Passes in English Language and Mathematics and satisfying the basic matriculation requirements of the Department/Institute:
- A Bachelor’s degree that has at least a second Class Honors (Lower Division) qualification in the relevant field from FUTO or any other University recognized.
- A bachelor’s degree from a recognized university and an average of not less than 2.50 CGPA on a 5-point scale, and a 2.50 CGPA on a 4-point scale for the area of study.
However, to be eligible for M.SC for M.SC. in Financial Management Technology and Management Technology students must hold “Level credit” with a minimum of English Language, Mathematics, Economics, and at least two of the subjects in Biology, Physics, and Agriculture Science and Geography.
3.1 M.SC IN OPTOMETRY
Candidates who are applying for admission to the Master of Science (M.Sc) in the Optometry program must be able to demonstrate any of the following as well as O’Level Credits in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Biology, and Chemistry:
- A Doctor of Optometry (O.D) degree that has at least 2.50 CGPA on a 5-point scale or 2.00 CGPA on a 4-point scale within the same field from FUTO or any other recognized university.
- Successful completion of the one-year internship in addition to the NYSC program.
3.2 Ph.D. IN OPTOMETRY
Candidates who are applying to be considered for admission into admission to the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in an Optometry program that includes choices in Clinical Optometry, Vision Science, as well as Ocular Health, must possess the following qualifications, in addition to O’level credits for English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Biology, and Chemistry:
- The Master of Science (M.Sc) degree from any recognized university in or outside of Nigeria with a CGPA of 2.50 or over on a 4.00 scale, and 3.50 and over on a 5.00 scale to be eligible for clinical optometry, Vision Science, and Ocular Health and Vision Science, respectively.
- The one-year internship program as well as the NYSC program.
- Other requirements must be met for other requirements of Postgraduate School that is part of The Federal University of Technology, Owerri.
3.3 M.SC IN GENDER STUDIES
Candidates who are applying to a Master of Science (M.Sc) in the Gender Studies program must possess one of the following qualifications:
- Higher National Diploma (HND) Upper Credit or above, plus the PGD for Gender Studies
- Master’s degrees in the discipline of your choice from FUTO or another recognized University that has at least a Third Class Honours and a PGY for Gender Studies.
- A Bachelor’s degree that is of high quality and with at the very least the level of Second Class Honours in related disciplines.
3.4 O’LEVEL REQUIREMENT FOR GENDER STUDIES
Candidates must hold O’level credit scores for English Language and Mathematics, along with any three other subjects in the following order:
- Gender and Development Studies/Entrepreneurship (Economics, Government or History, Commerce, Geography).
- Gender and Science/Global Health (Chemistry, Biology, Physics)
- Gender and Technology (Physics, Chemistry, and Biology or Agricultural Science).
- Gender and Agricultural Technology (Chemistry, Agricultural Science or Biology, and Food Nutrition or Home Economics).
4.0 MPH IN PUBLIC HEALTH TECHNOLOGY
Candidates who are interested in admission to the Master of Public Health (MPH) in the Public Health Technology program with Options in Infectious Diseases and Global Health program must have one of the following in addition to the O’level credits in English Mathematics, Language Biology, Physics, and Chemistry:
- A Master’s degree in Public Health (MPH) which has a minimum of 2.50 CGPA on a 5-point scale or 2.00 CGPA on a 4-point scale in the subject, obtained from FUTO or any other University recognized by the government.
- The one-year internship and NYSC program.
4.01 DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN PUBLIC HEALTH TECHNOLOGY
Candidates who wish to apply for admission to the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in the Public Health Technology Program with the Options in Infectious Diseases, as well as Global Health program, must possess one of the following in addition to O’level credit and a passing grade in English Language Biology, Mathematics Physics, Chemistry, and Physics:
- The Master’s degree in public health (MPH) qualification from any university that is recognized either in or outside Nigeria with a CGPA of 2.50 or over on a 5.0 scale, or 3.50 and over on a 5.0 scale.
5.0 M.Sc IN INSTITUTE OF EROSION STUDIES
Candidates who are applying to the Master of Science in Institute of Erosion Studies with the option of Integrated Watershed Management and Urban Drainage System and Management must have at least one of these, along with English and Mathematics, and must meet the minimum matriculation requirements for the department:
- A first-degree degree that is at least a second-class honors qualification that has at least 2.50 CGPA on a 5-point scale or 2.00 CGPA on a 4-point scale for the relevant field from FUTO or any other university recognized.
- A Bachelor’s degree earned from a recognized university with an average of not less than 3.50 CGPA on a 5-point scale, and a 2.00 CGPA on a 4.0-point scale within the relevant field.
5.01 Ph.D. IN THE INSTITUTE OF EROSION STUDIES
Candidates who are applying to be considered for Doctor of Philosophy in the Institute of Erosion Studies with the option of Integrated Watershed Management and Urban Drainage System Management must have at least one of these, as well as English and Mathematical skills, as well as the basic requirements for matriculation for the department:
- A Master’s degree has a CGPA at 3.50 on the 5.00 per point scale. Or 2.50 on the 4.0 point scale, or the equivalent in the relevant fields of FUTO or any other recognized university.

7.0 GENERAL ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR THE ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONIC ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT
Candidates must meet the following matriculation prerequisites:
- Five (5) credits are required in the O-level subjects comprising Mathematics, English, Physics, Chemistry, and one other Science subject.
7.1 POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Candidates with the following qualifications are eligible for admission provided they meet the UME requirements for admission into the Electrical/Electronic Engineering undergraduate program:
- Higher National Diploma (HND) in Electrical/Electronic Engineering with at least a Lower Credit.
- B.Sc, B.Eng, or B. Technology in Electrical and Electronic Engineering with at least a passing grade.
- HD for Communication Engineering (COE), Electronic and Computer Engineering (ECE) along with Power System Engineering (PSE) with at minimum lower credit.
- B.Sc, B.Eng, or B. Technology in Communication Engineering, Electronic and Computer Engineering or Power System Engineering with at minimum a passing grade.
- Other related disciplines could be taken into consideration.
7.2 MASTER (M.ENG) DEGREE ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
All applicants must meet the following conditions:
- The basic matriculation requirement is five (5) credits in five subjects that include Mathematics, English, and three Science subjects (Physics, Chemistry, and any other Science subject).
- A Bachelor of Science degree or equivalent with a major in Electrical and Electronic Engineering or other related fields to the program from an accredited university with at least a second-class honors lower division with a CGPA that is not lower than 2.50 on a five-point scale and 2.00 on a scale of four points from a recognized University.
- A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering or any other field that is relevant to the program, from an accredited university with the second class honors lower division and a CGPA at least 2.50 or third grade, along with the Post Bachelor Degree (PGD) in the relevant area of study from an accredited university.
- Other qualifications can be accepted by The University Senate.
7.3 DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (Ph.D.) DEGREE ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
All applicants must meet the following conditions:
- The basic matriculation requirement is five (5) credits for five subjects, including Mathematics, English, and three Science subjects (Physics, Chemistry, and any other Science subject).
- A Masters Master’s Degree or equivalent in Electrical and Electronic Engineering or any other relevant area of study from an accredited university with a minimum CGPA of 3.0 on a scale of 5.0 or the equivalent.
- Other qualifications can be accepted through The University Senate.
8.0 MASTER OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION (MBA)
Candidates who are applying for admission to the Master of Business Administration (MBA) program must hold one or more of the following, in along with O’Level Credit Grades in English as well as Mathematics, and meet the basic requirements for matriculation of the Department:
- A high-quality Honours Degree with at least a second First Class Honors (Lower Division) in the field of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Management Technology from FUTO or any other recognized university.
- Students who have a Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized university have at least a grade of third.
- Higher National Diploma (HND) with a lower or higher credit level plus the Postgraduate Diploma in a relevant field can be applied to the MBA program.
- A Bachelor’s degree in different fields, as well as a Ph.D. in a related area.
For MBA with a focus on Financial Management Technology and Management Technology, students must hold O’Level credits in English Language, Mathematics, Economics, and at least two Physics subjects or Science, Agricultural Science, and Geography.
9.0 DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (Ph.D.)
Candidates applying for the Ph.D. programme must possess any of the following in addition to O’Level Credit Passes in English and Mathematics and satisfying the basic matriculation requirements of the Department/Institute:
- A Master’s degree that has a CGPA that is 3.50 on a 5.00 points scale, or 3.00 on a 4.00-point scale, or equivalent to it in the areas of study of FUTO or any other recognized university.
- Other qualifications that a University Senate may at any point recognize/appoint.
10.0 PGD, M. Tech/Ph.D PROGRAMMES IN BUILDING TECHNOLOGY
GENERAL ENTRY REQUIREMENT
All applicants must have five credit scores at the O’level that include:
- English Language
- Mathematics
- Physics
- Chemistry
- Anyone who is interested in geography Biology, geography economics, agriculture science technical drawing, as well as applied or fine arts.
11.0 Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Building Technology
All applicants must meet the requirements for matriculation, which include five credit scores at the O’level in:
- English Language
- Mathematics
- Physics
- Chemistry
- Anyone who is interested in geography or biology sciences, agricultural science, economics technical drawing, as well as the fine arts and applied arts.
The following applicants are considered to be eligible for admission:
- Holders of HND who have at least a lower credit in Building or another related field that is accredited by a Polytechnic.
- The first-degree degree can be obtained in building Quantity Surveying or Engineering, and any related discipline, excluding (B.Ed) from an accredited University, at a minimum a Third Class Degree.
- A solid Bachelor’s degree, with at minimum the level of Second Class Honours in related disciplines.
11.1 M. TECH/Ph.D IN BUILDING TECHNOLOGY
The MSc. Tech/Ph.D program within Building Technology is offered with the following options:
- Construction Management
- Building Services
- Building and Facilities Maintenance Management
- Building Structures
11.1.1 M. TECH in Building Technology
Candidates with a strong B. Tech or B.Sc (Hons) degree in Building, with at minimum the Second Class Lower Division or another discipline that is related to an accredited university in Nigeria can be considered to be admitted into the M. Tech programme, in the event that they satisfy the O’level credit prerequisites. Students who hold a PGD certification along with their degree can submit an application to be considered.
11.1.2. Ph.D. in Building Technology
Candidates who hold a good M.Sc/M. A tech degree from an accredited university in Nigeria with a minimum score of a weighted average of 3.50 on a 5.00 scale, or 3.00 on the 4.00 scale can apply for a Ph.D. Programme in Building.
12.00 PGD, M. Tech/Ph.D in Urban and Religion Planning
Candidates must be able to demonstrate five credit points at O’Level comprising English Language, Mathematics, Geography, and at least two of the following: Physics Biology, Biology, Science Chemistry, Economics Technical Drawing, and Fine/Applied Art.
A. POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA (PGD) in URBAN and REGIONAL PLANNING
- All applicants must satisfy the matriculation requirements, which include five O’Level credits with a minimum of five credits in English Language, Mathematics, and Geography, as well as two other subjects from Biology, Physics, and Agriculture Science Chemistry, Economics, and Technical Drawing Fine and Applied Arts.
- holders of ND who have a minimal lower credit in town Planning or any other area from a recognized Polytechnic.
- A first degree is awarded from Environmental Studies, Social Sciences Engineering, or any other related field (except B.Ed) at an accredited University, with a minimum of a third-class degree.
- A high-quality Bachelor’s degree that has at the very least second Honours in related disciplines like geography, Sociology, etc.
13.00 MASTER OF TECHNOLOGY (M. Tech) IN URBAN AND REGIONAL PLANNING
Candidates who are applying for Master of Technology (M. Tech) in Urban and Regional Planning programs must have one or more of the following requirements as well as O’Level credit scores in English Language, Mathematics, Geography, and two of Physics Biology Agricultural Science, Chemistry Economics, Drawing Fine/Applied Arts and fulfilling the minimum matriculation requirements for the Department.
- B. Tech degree with a Bachelor’s diploma with a focus on Urban and Regional Planning (BURP) with at minimum second class honors (Lower Division) of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, or equivalent from another recognized university.
- B.Sc qualification from a recognized university with a PGD not less than 2.50 CGPA on a 5-point scale, and the equivalent of a 2.00 CGPA on a- 4-point scale in Social Sciences, Environmental Sciences, and Engineering in accordance with the Department.
14.0 DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (Ph.D.) IN URBAN AND REGIONAL PLANNING
Candidates interested in applying to admission to the Ph.D. program in Urban and Regional Planning should have one of the following qualifications in addition to O’Level credits with English Language, Mathematics, Geography, at least two of Physics Biology Agricultural Science, Chemistry Economics, Drawing Fine/Applied Arts and the minimum matriculation requirements of the Department.
- An advanced degree (M. Tech or the MURP on/M.sc) is required in Urban and Regional Planning with a CGPA of 3.50 or 3.50 on a 5.00 per point scale. Or 2.80 on the 4.00 point scale from any university recognized by the government.
- Any other qualifications as the University Senate can at any time recognize and accept.
15.0 PGD in Prosthetics and Orthotics
Participants for PGD must have any of the following qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in a third-class or lower grade with a CGPA of at least 3.00 on a scale of 5.00 in Prosthetics and Orthotics
- Higher National Diploma (HND) in Prosthetics ad Orthotics and occupational therapy from an accredited institution with a minimum lower credit score.
- A bachelor’s degree is required in the related sciences disciplines. Rehabilitation sciences, as well as other medical sciences, and related Engineering areas (B.Sc./B. Tech, B.Eng) with at least an upper-second-class degree from a recognized university.
15.2 M.Sc in Prosthetics and Orthotics
Candidates who want to apply to the M.Sc within the Prosthetics and Orthotics program with the option of Clinical as well as Rehabilitation, industrial, as well as Material must meet the fundamental requirements for matriculation, which include five credits in WASSCE or O’level level in Mathematical, English Language, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.

Candidates who are interested in a Ph.D. in the Prosthetics and Orthotics program must be able to demonstrate the following:
- Master’s degree in Orthotics and Prosthetics with a CGPA of 3.50 or higher in Prosthetics and Orthotics at FUTO and any other university recognized by the FUTO.
Note Candidates who have Master’s or Bachelor’s degrees in education (B.Ed as well as M.Ed) are not required to apply.
Duration of FUTO Postgraduate Programmes
- Ph.D. Programs include a Minimum of 6 (6) months and up to 10 (10) semesters for full-time students and at least 8 (8) months and 14 (14) sessions for students who are part-time.
- M.Sc, M.Eng, MPH, and MBA Programs Minimum of 3 (3) seasons and up to six (6) semesters for full-time students as well as at least four (4) semesters and up to 8 (8) semesters for part-time students.
- PGD Programs The minimum is 2 (2) terms and up to four (4) semesters for full-time students and the minimum of 4 (4) months and the maximum of 6 (6) sessions for students with part-time jobs.
- POSTGRADUATE (WEEKEND) Programmes:
- PGD Programs The minimum is 4 (4) months and up to 8 (8) Semesters.
- MBA Programs Minimum of 8 (8) months and up to 12 (12) months.
How to Obtain FUTO Postgraduate Admission Form
All interested candidates must pay a non-refundable amount of 11 three hundred and three hundred Nigerians (N11,300.00) in any Deposit Money Bank (DMB) via using the Remita Gateway on the Postgraduate application platform. After that, you can submit your online application.
It is recommended that applicants apply on the internet using the steps in the following:

- Step 2: Click on Prospective Students.
- Step 3: Select Postgraduate Application
- Step 4: click the link to apply here
- Step 5: Enter your email address
- Step 6: Click on Generate Invoice
- 7. Enter your information and click submit to create an invoice.
- Step 8: Print the invoice with your RRR number (Remita RRR Reference) and then go to the bank for payment, or use an ATM card to pay.
- Step 9: Revert back to Step 4 from above
- Step 10: Input your email once more to fill out this PG Application application online. Make sure that the email address of the referee that you provide is valid. A reference form link is delivered to your referees’ email addresses for filling out online.
- 11. Print an acknowledgment Slip after the form has been completed. An acknowledgment will arrive at the address that you specified when filling in the application. So, ensure that you give an email address that is legitimate.
NOTE:
- Students are advised to fill out the application online via www.futo.edu.ng on February 6, 2023.
- Verify that the email address is correct as a form link is given to your reference to complete online.
- Please be aware it is only valid email addresses as well as telephone numbers will be used for further communications will be conducted via these channels.

Note that any application that is not accompanied by an academic transcript is not considered a candidate for admission.
